In early 2017, the Board of Directors approved the creation of a new program called Community Cents to increase the impact of St. Croix Electric Cooperative’s Commitment to Community Grant program. Community Cents allows members to round up their monthly electric bill to the nearest dollar. The extra “cents” are set aside to be added to the annual Commitment to Community Grant allocation the following year when the directors review Commitment to Community Grant applications (June and November). Money collected in 2017 will be used in 2018. The $500 maximum award per organization in a calendar year will remain.
Since 2003, St. Croix Electric Cooperative has annually awarded Commitment to Community Grants to local organizations that help serve the unmet humanitarian, social and educational needs within our general service area. Through 2016, 179 unique organizations received more than $130,000 in grants; grants are capped at $500 in a calendar year per organization. But, even with $12,700 to distribute annually, the number of grant requests submitted each year continues to rise. By rounding up their monthly electric bill, members' "change" will make a difference by expanding the number of grant requests that can be fulfilled through the Commitment to Community Grant program. Neighboring electric cooperatives who offer this opportunity to their members distributed $31,000 and $52,000, respectively, to organizations in their services areas in 2016!
Members can enroll in Community Cents via the form below, by contacting the office at 715-796-7000 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. A box has also been added to the remit slips of SCEC’s monthly electric bills, which members can mark and return with their payment. By enrolling in the program, members understand they are enrolled in Community Cents until they notify SCEC - in writing - to cancel their enrollment. Thank you for your support!
